Somnath Ghosh Appointed as India’s Next High Commissioner to Malaysia

NEW DELHI — The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has officially appointed senior diplomat Shri Somnath Ghosh as the next High Commissioner of India to Malaysia.

Ghosh, a seasoned 1997-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, is currently serving as the Consul General of India in Chicago, United States. According to the MEA, he is expected to transition into his new diplomatic role in Kuala Lumpur shortly. He succeeds B. Nagabhushana Reddy, who recently concluded an extensive five-year tenure heading the Indian mission in Malaysia.

A Highly Decorated Diplomatic Profile

Ghosh brings nearly three decades of high-level geopolitical, strategic, and defense negotiation experience to his upcoming assignment in Malaysia:

  • Defense Cooperation Mastery – From September 2019 to September 2022, Ghosh managed international cooperation at the Indian Ministry of Defence. In this critical capacity, he supervised bilateral defense policies and led high-stakes negotiations with global superpowers including the United States, Russia, France, and Great Britain.

  • Ambassadorial Assignments – He previously served as India’s Ambassador to Tajikistan, as well as Ambassador to Mongolia between 2014 and 2016.

  • Regional & Consular Depth – His neighborhood diplomacy includes a critical stint as the Assistant High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, overseeing operations in the strategic Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

An alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur with a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree, Ghosh is a polyglot who speaks English, Hindi, Bengali, and Russian.
