Petronas Adopts AI for Enhanced Upstream Operations

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 June 2025: Petronas, Malaysia’s national oil and gas company, is set to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its upstream operations to enhance efficiency and decision-making. This strategic move was announced by Petronas President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik.

The use of AI is expected to accelerate various processes and deliver specific outcome solutions for upstream activities. This includes improving drilling completion, optimizing discovery, and streamlining the development and delivery of oil and gas. Petronas is in the early stages of this AI integration and is actively learning from other service providers, particularly in areas such as methane exploration.

Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik also noted that AI will play a role in making Petronas more consumer-oriented by enabling the company to offer products and services that customers desire. He emphasized that AI is becoming an “indispensable foundational technology” across various sectors, aligning with the global Fourth Industrial Revolution. Petronas is committed to carefully selecting the tools and methods deployed in this technological advancement.
