KUALA LUMPUR, 21 August 2025: The extraordinary life and decades-long public service of Datuk A. Vaithilingam have been celebrated and documented in a new biography, “Vaithi – A Life of Service.” Written by veteran journalist A. Kathirasen, the 32-chapter book was launched today at the Royal Lake Club, capturing the contributions of the 91-year-old Malaysian icon and his steadfast commitment to the nation.
During the launch, prominent figures lauded Vaithilingam’s dedication. National Land Finance Cooperative Society managing director Datuk B. Sahadevan praised him as the “perfect example of how to be a Malaysian,” emphasising his non-communal approach to public service. Former deputy International Trade and Industry minister Dr Ong Kian Ming described the book as “a wonderful read,” highlighting that Vaithilingam’s life and work are a testament to finding purpose in the service of others. The biography meticulously records his diverse roles, from leading the Malaysia Hindu Sangam to his pivotal involvement in interfaith matters and Malaysian athletics, for which he was inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Hall of Fame.
A. Kathirasen explained that the biography blends personal anecdotes with historical milestones, noting his subject’s exceptional memory. The book’s language was intentionally kept simple to ensure accessibility for a broad readership, including young people. Vaithilingam, reflecting on his work, stated that his guiding principle has always been to serve as a Malaysian for all Malaysians, regardless of race. He also shared the personal obstacles he faced during the book’s creation, including the passing of his wife and son, but expressed his determination to complete the project as a reflection of collective efforts to build bridges of understanding.
The launch was also attended by former health minister Tan Sri Dr S. Subramaniam and sports legend Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan, both of whom contributed to the book’s foreword.
