IPOH, July 19 – The federal government will review plans to increase allocations for welfare programs if financial performance metrics stay strong. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated on Sunday that targeted SARA cash assistance and STR payouts could see a major boost. Consequently, treasury officials are reviewing current budget lines to calculate how much extra funding can safely reach lower-income households later this year.
Reviewing Allocations For The SARA Cash Assistance Scheme
Speaking at the Madani Kita community gathering at the Taman Perpaduan community hall, Anwar explained that the initiative is undergoing active review. He confirmed that initial talks with Treasury Secretary-General Tan Sri Johan Mahmood Merican have already taken place. Therefore, financial planners will prioritize expanding the SARA cash assistance framework within the upcoming national budget planning timeline if the domestic revenue base permits.
The Prime Minister, who also leads the Ministry of Finance, emphasized that economic stability allows the state to return wealth directly to the public. He noted that while targeted fiscal reforms have successfully plugged leaks, global inflation continues to pressure local commodity markets.
“I called the Treasury leadership to discuss whether we could increase SARA further,” Anwar declared during his address to local volunteer officers. “In the budget, I will look closely at how we can expand this allocation to directly support the welfare of our people.”
Grassroots Support Beyond SARA Cash Assistance Channels
Furthermore, the government plans to expand parallel cost-of-living initiatives alongside direct monthly payouts. Anwar stated that supply disruptions for items like imported onions often lead to unexpected market price spikes. To combat these market fluctuations, the Ministry of Domestic Trade will scale up its Jualan Rahmah discounted sales programs across Perak to ensure basic foodstuffs remain highly affordable.
Meanwhile, the premier also used the local community platform to address the structural needs of civil security teams. He announced an ongoing financial allocation of RM3 million for the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) to improve member welfare services and maintain operational readiness. Additionally, the Home Ministry has received direct instructions to immediately identify and repair aging quarters assigned to active security personnel.
Ultimately, the final figures for the updated welfare packages will depend on overall national revenue tracking over the next fiscal quarter. Current treasury estimates show that the combined cash aid networks already shield over nine million low-income citizens from daily financial strain. By matching welfare increases directly with economic performance, the government aims to expand the social security net without widening the national fiscal deficit.
