KUALA LUMPUR, March 2- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed unwavering solidarity with Muslims and Middle Eastern communities, following a catastrophic escalation of violence triggered by United States and Israeli strikes on Iran.
The Prime Minister demanded an immediate, unconditional ceasefire to prevent the region from collapsing into total disaster. He urged Israel, the United States, and Iran to abandon provocative maneuvers and return to diplomatic negotiations. Anwar warned that continued aggression risks igniting a broader, uncontrollable global crisis that threatens international stability.
The Prime Minister characterized the current tensions as a historic tragedy for the Muslim world. His statement followed reports that coordinated airstrikes on Tehran killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on March 1. Iran has since launched retaliatory strikes against Israeli territory and American military installations. Anwar lamented the decades of colonization and land seizures that continue to plague the region, calling for a swift restoration of justice and peace.
The conflict has already begun to disrupt Malaysia’s economic landscape. Former minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz warned that restricted West Asian airspace has forced Malaysia Airlines to reroute or cancel several European flights. These diversions lead to higher fuel expenditures and significant delays in air cargo, which is vital for Malaysia’s high-value electronics exports.
Global oil markets have reacted sharply to the instability near critical supply routes. Rising energy prices are currently inflating logistics costs, while investors flocking to safe-haven assets like the US dollar are placing downward pressure on the Malaysian ringgit. Tengku Zafrul emphasized that while a short-lived conflict might have limited effects, Malaysia must prepare for a prolonged economic impact.
Addressing internal affairs, Prime Minister Anwar dismissed claims that the government failed to act against the recent desecration of the Quran. He confirmed that authorities are conducting a comprehensive investigation into a student detained for allegedly insulting Islam on social media.
Anwar stressed that Malaysia operates under the rule of law rather than social media speculation or emotional pressure. He urged the public to refrain from making inflammatory statements that could jeopardize national harmony, assuring citizens that the legal process will ensure justice while maintaining public peace.
