PETALING JAYA — The decision by PAS to sever its alliance with Bersatu has fractured the federal opposition bloc, effectively ending its chances of capturing Putrajaya, according to Urimai chairman P Ramasamy. Consequently, Ramasamy stated that the party has handed the federal government to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on a silver platter. This fragmentation within Perikatan Nasional follows a major rift between the two conservative heavyweights. As a result, the sudden fallout has fundamentally shifted the balance of power.
Clearly, the timing favors the administration. With the opposition fragmented, Putrajaya holds a clear strategic advantage. “There is a possibility that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim might congratulate the PAS leadership for accomplishing a political feat that Pakatan Harapan itself could not achieve,” Ramasamy noted in a statement.
Furthermore, a central flaw in the strategy of PAS remains its rigid regional focus. The party continues to rely heavily on its traditional strongholds in northern and eastern states rather than building a viable national identity. Ramasamy observed that the policy differences between the two organizations were entirely manageable, making the split an unforced tactical blunder.
The collapse of the partnership might offer a clean slate for the remaining members of the alliance. Operating independently from the ideological constraints of PAS could allow Bersatu to reshape its public image and appeal to a broader, more moderate voter base.
