PETALING JAYA — Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to elevating its microelectronics industry into a premier global hub, citing technological advancement and high-value manufacturing as core drivers of national growth.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for semiconductor giant NXP Semiconductors’ new 500,000-square-foot facility expansion in Petaling Jaya, Gobind emphasized that the nation’s rapidly expanding semiconductor sector is pivotal to its digital transformation.
Moving Up the Semiconductor Value Chain
The Minister highlighted that Malaysia is transitioning beyond traditional assembly to focus on high-value segments, including:
- Integrated Circuit (IC) Design: Building localized intellectual property and architecture capabilities.
- Advanced Packaging: Strengthening backend manufacturing and assembly technology.
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hardware: Supporting hardware infrastructure required for global digital and AI workloads.
“Through combined public and private initiatives, the country is strengthening research capabilities and upgrading production facilities to solidify its standing as a premier global microelectronics hub,” Gobind said.
Talent Development and Global Partnerships
While advanced equipment and infrastructure are fundamental, Gobind stressed that technology alone cannot guarantee sustained economic success. Cultivating a highly skilled local technical workforce remains essential for long-term competitiveness.
Joint initiatives between the government and multinational tech partners are designed to provide local engineers and technicians with direct exposure to cutting-edge manufacturing practices.
The Minister noted that NXP’s continued investment reflects the robust, long-standing bilateral and economic relationship between Malaysia and the Netherlands, underscoring Malaysia’s reputation as a reliable and competitive partner for global technology enterprises.
Project Scope and Strategic Impact
- Factory Footprint: The new facility adds roughly 500,000 square feet, expanding NXP’s total production area in Petaling Jaya to approximately 900,000 square feet.
- Capacity Boost: Once fully operational, the expanded site’s total output is projected to more than double.
- Timeline: Production ramp-up at the automated smart factory is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2028.
