Kelantan Police Chief Urges Malaysian Motorists to Respect Thai Traffic Laws

KOTA BHARU — Malaysian motorists entering Thailand must familiarize themselves with and strictly obey the neighboring nation’s legal regulations to avoid facing law enforcement action, Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat advised today.

Speaking at a press conference at the Kelantan Contingent Police Headquarters, Mohd Yusoff emphasized that significant legal differences exist between Malaysia and Thailand regarding vehicle standards, particularly concerning vehicle modifications.

Vehicle Modifications and Compliance Warnings

Mohd Yusoff highlighted that vehicle modifications permitted under Malaysian law may be prohibited across the border.

“The same applies when Thai nationals enter Malaysia; they must obey our laws. Similarly, when we enter Thailand, we must strictly comply with theirs,” Mohd Yusoff said. “For example, motorcycle modifications may be allowed in Malaysia, but they might be banned in Thailand. That is why drivers and riders must understand local laws before crossing the border.”

He urged motorists to ensure full compliance with auxiliary requirements, such as compulsory border insurance coverage, to prevent being detained or fined by foreign authorities.

Context of Recent Enforcement Action

The warning follows media reports detailing an incident in Hat Yai, Thailand, where a group of 17 Malaysian convoy riders were issued traffic summonses by Thai police.

Summonses totaling 15,000 baht (approximately RM1,850) were issued for multiple traffic violations, including the use of unauthorized flashing lights, excessively loud exhaust systems, and other vehicle modification offenses.
