RIO DE JANEIRO, 7 July 2025: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi engaged in significant discussions on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit, exploring avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation. Key outcomes included preliminary talks on establishing an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Malaysia and increasing Indian investment in Malaysia’s burgeoning future-focused sectors.
The proposed IIT campus represents a pivotal initiative aimed at strengthening educational ties and fostering human capital development, with IITs recognized globally as premier institutions for engineering and technology. Concurrently, India has expressed keen interest in channeling investments into Malaysia’s rapidly expanding industries, specifically identifying areas such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy, and aerospace. Both leaders underscored the substantial potential to broaden strategic cooperation across diverse fields, including trade, digital technology, and defense.
Prime Minister Anwar further articulated Malaysia’s commitment to bolstering connections between the citizens of both nations, emphasizing collaborative efforts in education, culture, and tourism. The discussions also encompassed critical global matters, particularly regional peace and stability, with both leaders affirming their support for equitable and peaceful resolutions to international challenges. Additionally, Prime Minister Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s eagerness to reinforce the ASEAN-India relationship, anticipating the forthcoming ASEAN-India Summit scheduled for October.
This meeting signifies a deepening bond between Malaysia and India, underscoring a mutual commitment to building a robust future through strategic partnerships in cutting-edge industries and advanced education.
