KUALA LUMPUR — Parti Bersama Malaysia is planning to contest between 10 and 20 parliamentary seats in the upcoming 16th general election.
Speaking at a public dialogue session in Taman Sri Rampai, party leader Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad stated that the political group will remain independent. The party will not join forces with any major political alliance, even if the election results leave the country without a clear winning coalition.
Instead, the leadership is open to signing a post-election agreement focused on major policy improvements. This approach mirrors a 2021 arrangement where the opposition signed a cooperation pact with the administration of then-Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to ensure national stability.
Such an arrangement would only serve as a final option to maintain government stability. The group intends to use the agreement to push for specific governance updates while refusing to formally join any ruling coalition.
Strategic Independence and Upcoming State Elections
Talk of an early national election continues to grow across the country. The state governments of Johor and Negeri Sembilan are already scheduled to hold localized state elections on July 11 and August 1, respectively.
Party leader Rafizi Ramli previously confirmed that the organization will avoid all political alliances ahead of these state-level polls. Operating independently allows the group to follow a distinct campaign strategy without being restricted by commitments to larger political parties.
Strict Standards Set for New Candidates
The leadership recently opened applications for any citizen wishing to run as an election candidate under the party banner. Initial priority is being given to applicants targeting seats in Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
The selection process follows a strict, multi-step evaluation system,
- Background Checks– Applicants must officially register as members and pass thorough background screenings.
- Financial Disclosure– Potential candidates must fully declare personal income, asset holdings, employment history, and family backgrounds.
- Community Feedback– The party plans to run local community surveys to evaluate public opinion regarding each potential candidate.
The group aims to ensure that 70% of the selected election candidates are under the age of 50. The party is also actively working to maximize the representation of female candidates on the final ballot.
