Penang is bracing for a massive economic lift as the state hosts the National Journalists’ Day celebrations, known as HAWANA 2026, from June 19 to 21. This prestigious gathering marks the first time Penang welcomes the event, highlighting its excellent capability to manage large, international functions. State officials expect the influx of media personnel to act as a powerful catalyst for local businesses and long-term tourism branding.

Wong Hon Wai, the State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman, expressed immense confidence in the state’s readiness. He shared that local tourism operators are already observing a sharp, promising increase in hotel room bookings. Fortunately, Seberang Perai has ample accommodation capacity to effortlessly house the thousands of delegates arriving over the three-day period.

The direct economic ripple effects will quickly extend far beyond hotel stays. Local restaurants, transportation services, and shopping hubs are set to experience heightened demand from the visiting crowds. Since the event brings together roughly 1,000 local and ASEAN journalists, Penang will naturally secure wide, valuable media exposure that promotes its unique culinary culture and heritage attractions.

Simultaneously, the public can dive into the festivities through the “RIUH Pi HAWANA” carnival at the PICCA Convention Centre in Butterworth. The carnival aims to attract over 30,000 visitors by bringing together dozens of local creative brands, food vendors, and free live music acts. Ultimately, the state government views the media as an essential strategic partner to market local talent and reinforce public travel confidence.
