PUTRAJAYA, July 13 – Former Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman remains a completely free man today after the country’s highest judicial body ruled that the high-profile politician is permanently cleared of all historical financial charges. In a highly anticipated 2–1 split majority decision, the Federal Court officially dismissed the prosecution’s final structural appeal, solidifying earlier decisions that saw Syed Saddiq acquitted of multiple misappropriation counts.
The definitive ruling effectively brings a dramatic six-year legal saga to a close, eliminating a prior High Court conviction from November 2023 that carried a severe penalty of seven years in prison, two strokes of the cane, and a staggering RM10 million fine. Two judges on the three-member apex panel, Justice Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, agreed that the prosecution had failed to establish the foundational elements of dishonesty required to prove the alleged offenses.
The criminal charges originally alleged that the 33-year-old Muar Member of Parliament abetted in the criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million belonging to the Bersatu Youth wing (Armada) back in March 2020. Additional charges accused him of misappropriating RM120,000 from political fundraising accounts and engaging in two subsequent counts of money laundering.
“The prosecution’s appeal is hereby dismissed. The previous decision by the Court of Appeal is affirmed, and the respondent remains legally discharged,” Justice Che Mohd Ruzima stated while delivering the comprehensive majority judgment.
While Court of Appeal President Justice Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais offered a dissenting view on three of the four charges, the majority held firm that the funds raised were entirely legitimate donations intended for localized political campaigns rather than personal enrichment. Surrounded by his defense team and immediate family, a visibly relieved Syed Saddiq expressed profound gratitude to the Malaysian judiciary for maintaining an unbiased system of public justice.
With all domestic judicial appellate avenues completely exhausted, the young politician stated his immediate focus will shift toward local community duties in Muar and private family milestones. The definitive outcome reshapes contemporary political dynamics, leaving a prominent youth leader fully unburdened by historic courtroom constraints as legislative sessions press forward.
