BEIJING – In a dramatic shift for U.S. tech diplomacy, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang joined President Donald Trump’s delegation to Beijing this week following a direct, last-minute personal invitation from the President himself. The move comes after initial reports suggested the White House had excluded the chipmaking titan from the official list of business leaders accompanying the administration to China.
The invitation was finalized while Air Force One was en route to Asia. Huang, who was not among the original group departing from Washington, was spotted boarding the presidential aircraft during a scheduled refueling stop in Anchorage, Alaska. The President later took to social media to clarify Huang’s presence, dismissing reports of a snub and describing the Nvidia leader as a vital part of the mission.
This late addition places Nvidia’s interests at the center of the summit. The company has been navigating a complex regulatory landscape as it seeks permission to sell its powerful H200 artificial intelligence chips to the Chinese market. While some Washington officials remain cautious about sharing advanced technology, Trump has signaled a desire to use the summit to urge President Xi Jinping to “open up” China to American business.
Huang joins an elite roster of corporate executives, including Tesla’s Elon Musk and Apple’s Tim Cook, who are looking to ease trade tensions and resolve market access barriers. For Nvidia, the stakes are particularly high. The Chinese market represents a multi-billion dollar opportunity, but current export restrictions have complicated the company’s expansion plans.
The summit represents the first visit by a sitting U.S. president to China in nearly ten years. Beyond technology and trade, the discussions are expected to cover a range of sensitive global issues, including regional security and existing trade agreements.
