SARAWAK, 13 November 2025: The Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has achieved a major technological milestone, becoming the first public university in Malaysia to fully integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the management and execution of its convocation ceremony. This significant digital transformation was unveiled during the university’s 29th Convocation Ceremony, cementing UNIMAS’s position as a pioneer in digitalising higher education administration.
The integration of AI aims to streamline and enhance the entire convocation process, moving beyond traditional manual systems to create a more efficient, seamless, and data-driven experience for the university, its graduates, and their families.
Key AI Transformation Features
The AI-powered management system addresses multiple facets of the large-scale event:
- Process Automation: The technology automates complex logistical tasks, including registration, seating arrangements, gown management, and the compilation of graduate data.
- Efficiency and Precision: By replacing manual data entry and cross-checking, the AI system drastically reduces the potential for human error, ensuring precision in the ceremony’s execution.
- Enhanced Experience: The system facilitates quicker and more accurate flow control during the actual ceremony, improving the overall experience for attendees.
This pioneering move by UNIMAS demonstrates a commitment to aligning administrative practices with the demands of the fourth industrial revolution (IR 4.0). By leveraging AI, the university is not only modernising its operations but also setting a new benchmark for other higher learning institutions across Malaysia.
The success of the AI-integrated convocation at UNIMAS serves as a strong case study for how advanced technology can be successfully applied to large-scale, culturally important academic events, paving the way for further digital transformation in the education sector.
