Vaikasi Visakam is an important Hindu festival celebrated mainly in Tamil Nadu and other southern states of India. It marks the birth anniversary of Lord Murugan, the god of courage, wisdom, and victory. This year, Vaikasi Visakam falls on June 9, 2025.
According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Murugan is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He was born to defeat the demon Surapadman and protect the world from evil. The festival is celebrated during the Visakam Nakshatra in the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May-June).
On this day, devotees visit Murugan temples to offer prayers and perform special rituals like abhishekam (holy bath) and pujas. Many decorate their homes with flowers and rangoli. Devotees also observe fasts and chant mantras to seek Lord Murugan’s blessings for courage, wisdom, and protection from evil.
In Tamil Nadu, grand temple celebrations include flag hoisting, chariot processions, and the divine wedding ceremony of Lord Murugan with Goddesses Valli and Deivanai. Vaikasi Visakam is a joyful occasion that brings families and communities together in devotion and celebration.
This festival honors the bravery and divine power of Lord Murugan, inspiring his followers to lead a life of courage and righteousness.
