Acclaimed director Vetrimaaran has confirmed that the sequel to his gritty 2018 hit, Vada Chennai, will indeed commence production in 2026, with actor-producer Dhanush back in the lead role.
At a public event, Vetrimaaran affirmed Dhanush’s earlier comments from the Kuberaa audio launch, saying, “Vada Chennai belongs to Dhanush… he has announced it will begin next year,” adding that the sequel will follow his upcoming collaboration with veteran producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu and their venture under Dhanush’s Vels International banner, widely believed to be Vada Chennai 2.
Meanwhile, behind-the-scenes images emerged online of Vetrimaaran directing Silambarasan TR alongside filmmaker Nelson, fueling speculation that this current project set to shoot later this year, may be connected to the Vada Chennai universe.
The filmmaker’s recent release, Viduthalai: Part 2 (2024), has already earned critical acclaim, and Vaadivaasal — starring Suriya and produced by Thanu — is next in the lineup. Only after completing these will Vetrimaaran and Dhanush embark on the much-anticipated Vada Chennai 2.
With a series of high-profile projects lined up under his belt, Vetrimaaran continues to cement his reputation for bold, uncompromising storytelling in Tamil cinema.
