SERI KEMBANGAN, Feb 7– Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a thunderous reception as he addressed a massive gathering of the Indian diaspora at the MINES International Exhibition & Convention Centre. The event, titled “Selamat Datang Modi Ji,” drew a capacity crowd of 15,000 attendees, marking a historic milestone in India-Malaysia relations.
The atmosphere remained electric as members of the Indian community, including Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and expatriates, expressed profound enthusiasm for the Prime Minister. Despite the massive turnout, the registration process remained smooth and well-organized. Attendees praised the high-quality hall facilities, which comfortably managed the surge of visitors representing a diverse coalition of Hindu NGOs and cultural organizations.
During his address, Prime Minister Modi hailed the global influence of Tamil culture, describing it as “eternal and universal.” He emphasized that the vibrant Indian diaspora in Malaysia serves as a living bridge between the two nations. The Prime Minister specifically lauded the community for preserving its linguistic roots, noting that Tamil literature continues to inspire the world with its timeless wisdom.
The event reached a symbolic peak as PM Modi was joined by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The presence of both leaders underscored a shared commitment to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Ibrahim welcomed his “brother” Modi, acknowledging the 2.9 million-strong Indian-origin community as a vital pillar of Malaysia’s multicultural identity and economic progress.
The evening featured a breathtaking cultural showcase that earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records. Over 800 dancers performed a synchronized Indian classical sequence, representing the largest ensemble of its kind in Malaysian history. This performance served as a tribute to the deep-seated cultural ties that link the two maritime neighbors.
PM Modi concluded his address by urging the diaspora to act as brand ambassadors for “New India.” He highlighted India’s rapid economic transformation and invited the Malaysian-Indian community to play an active role in the nation’s growth story. The event ended with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” reflecting the deep emotional bond between the diaspora and their ancestral homeland.
