Anwar Ibrahim Applauds Vijay’s Victory in Tamil Nadu Elections

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his warmest congratulations to his friend and South Indian cinema icon Vijay on his landmark election as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The victory marks a significant shift in regional politics, as the actor successfully traded the silver screen for the highest seat of state governance.

In a heartfelt social media post on Tuesday, Anwar Ibrahim noted that for years, fans have watched Vijay defeat corrupt politicians and villains within the span of a three-hour film. However, he emphasized that the people of Tamil Nadu have now entrusted the leader with a real-world responsibility far greater than any cinematic role. He described the win as the realization of the “Oru Viral Puratchi” or “one-finger revolution,” a slogan from Vijay’s film career that has now become a historic political reality.

Vijay, formally known as Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay, led his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to a decisive performance in the 2026 state elections. His administration recently cleared its first major hurdle by winning a vote of confidence in the Legislative Assembly with 144 votes. The victory effectively ended the decades-long dominance of the traditional Dravidian parties, signaling a new direction for the state’s 72 million residents.

The Malaysian Prime Minister took the opportunity to highlight the deep-rooted cultural and historical bonds that link Malaysia and Tamil Nadu. With generations of shared heritage and strong people-to-people ties, Anwar expressed his eagerness to work closely with Chief Minister Vijay to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the years ahead.

The 51-year-old leader was officially sworn in on Sunday, May 10, following a campaign built on promises of clean governance, youth empowerment, and social reform. As he steps into the Secretariat, the international community, led by neighbors like Malaysia, remains optimistic about the potential for fresh leadership to drive progress and stability in South India.
