KYIV – A massive wave of Russian drones and missiles struck the Ukrainian capital early Thursday morning, killing at least 13 people and injuring dozens more. Local officials described the assault as one of the largest and most destructive aerial attacks since the conflict began. The strikes hit multiple residential areas, forcing thousands of families to flee into underground shelters as explosions echoed across the city.
The most severe damage occurred in the Darnytskyi district, where a high-rise apartment building partially collapsed after being struck by falling debris. Emergency teams worked throughout the day to pull survivors from the twisted metal and concrete ruins. Sadly, officials confirmed that two children were among those who lost their lives in the rubble. Beyond the loss of life, the barrage severely damaged the city’s infrastructure, cutting off water and electricity to several major neighborhoods.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched more than 1,500 drones over 48 hours. While Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept many of the targets, the sheer volume of the swarm appeared designed to overwhelm local defense systems. The President addressed the nation shortly after the strikes, stating that such a violent escalation proves Russia is not yet serious about peace talks.
In response to the tragedy, Ukraine is calling for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to address the targeting of civilian areas. Zelenskyy has also promised a firm military response and urged international allies to speed up the delivery of advanced air defense tools. As the city begins the grim task of clearing the debris, the hope for a diplomatic solution seems further away than ever.
