21-Gun Salute Welcomes Landmark Singapore President Visit At Istana Negara

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 – Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam was accorded an elegant state welcoming ceremony at Istana Negara on Monday, initiating a highly significant three-day Singapore president visit aimed at deepening neighborhood diplomatic and economic cooperation. The ceremony marks his inaugural official state visit to Malaysia since assuming office as the republic’s ninth president in September 2023.

President Tharman and his spouse, Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, arrived at the national palace gates at 10:00 a.m., where they were warmly received by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, alongside senior Cabinet ministers and diplomatic delegates, attended the arrival square to mark the occasion.

The formal reception at the palace parade ground commenced with a stirring rendition of both nations’ anthems performed by the Central Band of the Royal Malay Regiment, accentuated by a traditional 21-gun salute. President Tharman subsequently inspected a majestic guard of honor consisting of four officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, commanded by Major Mohd Masrur Hidayat Masri.

“This official visit beautifully mirrors the enduring structural partnership and deep historical familiarity that binds our two neighboring nations together,” Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted in a morning press release.

Running from July 13 to 15, the high-level Singapore president visit directly reciprocates Sultan Ibrahim’s successful state trip to Singapore back in May 2024. Following the parade inspection, the leaders held a private royal audience to discuss regional stability and upcoming cross-border infrastructure connectivity initiatives before a grand State Banquet.

The diplomatic dialogue unfolds amidst exceptional commercial growth between the two ASEAN powerhouses. Official trade registries reveal that Singapore remains Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner globally, with bilateral trade between January and May 2026 accelerating by 14.5% to RM189.90 billion ($47.87 billion), up from the same period last year. The presidential delegation is scheduled to hold secondary roundtables with regional financial directors in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor before concluding the itinerary on Wednesday.
