Anwar Urges Wisdom Over Anger in Umno Relations

MELAKA — Prime Minister and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told party delegates today that any decision regarding the party’s alliance with Barisan Nasional (BN) must prioritize the public’s welfare rather than personal frustration or anger.

Speaking during his winding-up speech at the PKR National Congress at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Anwar urged delegates to approach relations with Umno through political wisdom that puts national interest above partisan conflict.

Prioritising Stability Over Partisan Friction

Anwar’s remarks came amid visible friction from party delegates on the floor regarding PKR’s alliance with BN.

“With regards to Umno-BN, whatever the decision it cannot be based on our disappointment or anger,” Anwar told the delegates. “It must always be driven by public and national interests. You may say they care less about the people, I say we must care. Because we should be the rational one, and there must be wisdom and insights.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN coalition through to the next general election, citing economic growth and national stability as the primary reasons for maintaining the pact. He added that his personal working relationship with Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi remains strong.

Readiness to Confront Political Opponents

While advocating for continued federal cooperation, Anwar made clear that PKR remains prepared to defend its political ground if forced into battle.

“If you ask me this is my choice. But what is their choice let them answer,” Anwar said. “If we must langgar then we will langgar, but as I said earlier, by being rational and full of wisdom we must protect this unity.”

The Prime Minister concluded by thanking coalition partners across PH, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) for supporting federal stability through the remainder of the parliamentary term.
