BATU CAVES, 11 November 2025: The iconic 42.7-metre (140 ft) golden statue of Lord Murugan at the entrance of Batu Caves in Selangor, Malaysia, is undergoing a sacred restoration process. This significant effort is being undertaken as the landmark prepares for its upcoming 20th anniversary.
The colossal statue, the tallest Lord Murugan statue in the world, was officially unveiled on January 29, 2006, during the annual Thaipusam festival. Since the statue was completed in 2006, its 20th anniversary will occur in early 2026.
The restoration work, which is part of the ongoing maintenance of the sacred site, is crucial for preserving the statue’s structural integrity and its distinctive gold-painted finish, which was originally applied using over 300 litres of gold paint imported from Thailand. Although specific recent details about the restoration steps are limited in available public reports, such efforts typically involve cleaning, crack repair, and re-gilding to maintain the structure’s majestic appearance ahead of major events like the Thaipusam festival and its landmark anniversary.
The statue remains a central feature of the Batu Caves complex, which is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites outside of India.
