KUALA LUMPUR, 11 November 2025: US Pizza Malaysia has faced severe backlash from the Malaysian Hindu community following the launch of a new pizza box design that prominently features the image of the sacred Hindu deity, Lord Murugan. This commercial use of religious imagery has been strongly condemned as an act of sacrilege by the Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram (MHDM).
The controversy surrounds the new packaging, which includes a depiction of Lord Murugan alongside secular, cartoon illustrations of Malaysian landmarks, local animals, and various characters consuming pizza.

MHDM’s Official Condemnation and Demands
Mr. Rishikumar Vadivelu, President of the Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram, issued a critical statement outlining the organisation’s deep concerns, which center on the violation of religious sanctity and the disrespectful manner of disposal:
Act of Sacrilege and Commercialisation:
- The organisation firmly rejects the attempt to integrate Hindu’s religious elements into commercial, disposable packaging, especially by featuring a major deity. This action has resulted in an act of sacrilege rather than celebration.
Profound Religious Offence: Association with Food
- Maamandram strongly condemns the link established between a holy deity and commercial food packaging, particularly given the contents. These boxes may contain non-vegetarian food, and potentially beef, which is strictly prohibited and considered profoundly offensive to many Hindus.
Unacceptable Disregard for Sanctity: Disposal Concerns
- A critical element of the condemnation relates to the product’s lifespan and final resting place. The organisation raises a serious question:
“We sincerely question whether US Pizza was aware of the fundamental consequence of this packaging: these boxes are destined for the garbage immediately after use. The inclusion of a sacred image on single-use, disposable material that will inevitably be discarded as ordinary trash displays a complete and unacceptable disregard for the holiness of the deity.”
The MHDM’s statement concluded with clear demands for swift action:
- Immediate withdrawal, halt of production, and nationwide cessation of the distribution and use of the offensive pizza box design.
- A clear, unconditional, and public apology to the entire Hindu community in Malaysia.
This incident has prompted calls for greater cultural awareness and sensitivity in corporate marketing practices to safeguard interfaith harmony in the country.
