CHENNAI, 06 November 2025: After a gap of 46 years since their last full collaboration, Tamil cinema titans Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are set to officially reunite for the highly anticipated film, tentatively titled ‘Thalaivar 173’ (Rajinikanth’s 173rd film). In a major development that has thrilled fans globally, the movie will be produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI), with veteran director Sundar C helming the project.
The production marks a colossal moment in Indian cinema, bringing together the two biggest icons who once frequently collaborated early in their careers. The film is officially slated for a grand festive release during Pongal 2027.
The Creative Team and Fan Reaction
Sundar C, known for his commercial blockbusters, is confirmed as the director, setting high expectations for a mass entertainer that leverages the star power of ‘Thalaivar’. While the cast details remain under wraps, the announcement alone has dominated public discourse.
However, the news was not without its accompanying fan discourse:
- Disappointment over Composer: A notable point of contention among fans has been the exclusion of popular youth composer Anirudh Ravichander from the project’s music team. Anirudh, who has delivered chartbusters for Rajinikanth’s recent films, was a strong favourite, leading to vocal disappointment among a segment of the audience.
- High Expectations: Fans have expressed their hopes for a film that serves as a fitting cinematic reunion, demanding a powerful script that justifies the historical magnitude of the stars coming together after nearly five decades.
Kamal Haasan’s decision to produce Rajinikanth’s next venture, rather than co-starring, focuses the narrative squarely on the strength of their professional bond and shared history. This powerful collaboration, driven by two industry heavyweights, promises to be one of the most significant cinematic events of the coming years.
