KUALA LUMPUR — Rapid KL has officially launched a digital version of its Rapid Monthly Pass (Rapid Bulanan) priced at RM150, allowing commuters to purchase and activate unlimited 30-day travel entirely through the Touch ‘n Go (TNG) eWallet app. The move represents a major structural shift by operator Prasarana Malaysia Berhad to digitize public transport infrastructure and eliminate physical congestion at customer service counters.
The pass provides 30 consecutive days of un-capped travel across the entirety of the Klang Valley’s integrated transit network, encompassing the LRT, MRT, Monorail, Sunway BRT, Rapid KL buses, and MRT feeder bus systems.
Breaking the National Barrier
Unlike the heavily subsidized My50 Travel Pass, which remains strictly restricted to Malaysian citizens via MyKad verification, the RM150 Rapid Monthly Pass is open to all commuters, including expatriates, regional migrant workers, and long-term tourists.
Public transport analysts note that this marks the first time an all-inclusive, multi-mode unlimited transit tier has been made accessible to non-citizens in Kuala Lumpur without requiring over-the-counter handling. For daily foreign commuters navigating the city’s central business districts, the flat rate offers drastic cost predictability over standard per-trip distance pricing.
Technical Prerequisites and Hidden Caveats
Commuters looking to migrate to the digital transit pass must meet specific smartphone hardware criteria and understand the underlying turnstile mechanics. According to official deployment guidelines, the process requires,
- NFC Capabilities & App Updates– A smartphone equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality running the latest version of the TNG eWallet application.
- Physical Hardware Links– The pass must be digitally bound by tapping an Enhanced Touch ‘n Go card or TNG Charm against the back of the smartphone.
- The RM5 Threshold– Commuters must ensure that their physical TNG card or charm maintains a minimum cash balance of RM5.00 at all times for the transit gates to validate entry, despite holding an active unlimited pass.
Rapid KL explicitly clarified that the digital eWallet app handles activation only and does not turn the smartphone into a virtual transit token; passengers must still carry and scan their physical cards or charms at all station barriers. For commuters who lack NFC-enabled devices, conventional physical pass processing will remain fully operational at all rail customer service counters.
