KUALA LUMPUR — While heart attacks have traditionally been viewed as an age-related health issue affecting older adults, medical experts warn that this perception must urgently change as younger Malaysians increasingly face cardiovascular risks.
According to medical experts, Malaysians are suffering heart attacks nearly 10 years earlier on average compared to populations in other countries.
Risk Factors and Silent Threat
The growing prevalence of heart disease among younger demographics is primarily driven by lifestyle and underlying health conditions ,
- Primary Contributors – Poor dietary habits, physical inactivity, smoking, high body weight, diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels play a major role in early-onset heart disease.
- The Silent Riskv- A concerning aspect is that many young individuals remain completely unaware of their cardiovascular risks. The absence of noticeable early symptoms often leads people to assume they are healthy, delaying essential medical checks and increasing danger.
Critical Warning Signs and Prevention
Doctors urge the public never to ignore potential warning signs. Immediate medical attention must be sought if experiencing:
- Chest pressure or pain
- Shortness of breath
- Excessive sweating
- Nausea
- Pain radiating to the arms, shoulders, or jaw
Rather than waiting to seek treatment after a cardiac event occurs, medical experts stress that early prevention is the most effective defense. Individuals are strongly advised from a young age to regularly monitor their blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels while adopting healthy lifestyle habits.
