CYBERJAYA — The Malaysian government will subsidize three-month subscriptions to premium artificial intelligence (AI) software for 100,000 young citizens as part of a national initiative to accelerate digital literacy and produce a new wave of coders and engineers.
Announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the launch of AI Malaysia on Tuesday, the initiative targets Malaysians aged 18 to 30. Access will be granted to individuals who complete specialized online training modules under the government’s official Rakyat Digital platform, set to go live on Merdeka Day (August 31).
Ministry Handed Two-Week Deadline for Curriculum
The Digital Ministry, under Minister Gobind Singh Deo, has been given a two-week mandate to finalize the specialized curriculum.
To qualify for the software incentive, participants must complete modules across five core domains,
- AI Security & Cyber SAFE: Data privacy, threat awareness, and ethical usage.
- Agentic & Generative AI: Autonomous AI workflows and practical content creation.
- Cloud Untuk Rakyat: Fundamental cloud computing infrastructure.
While the government has yet to reveal which commercial AI software platforms will be included in the free tier, the incentive aims to lower the financial barrier to enterprise-grade AI tools.
Addressing the Digital Divide
In his address, Anwar emphasized that the initiative is designed to prevent an expanding socioeconomic rift between urban elites and rural communities.
“We must ensure that this transformation does not widen existing inequalities or deepen the gap between urban and rural populations,” Anwar said, urging public institutions to prioritize AI access for all demographics.
The initiative marks a flagship deployment under AI Malaysia, the state-backed body established to align national policies and drive the country’s AI Nation 2030 roadmap.
