MADRID, 3 July 2025: Diogo Jota, the celebrated 28-year-old Portuguese forward for Liverpool Football Club, and his 26-year-old brother, Andre Silva, have tragically died in a fiery car crash in northwestern Spain on Thursday, July 3, 2025. The devastating incident occurred near Zamora shortly after midnight, when their Lamborghini veered off the road and subsequently burst into flames. Initial reports from Spanish state-owned TVE and local authorities suggested a burst tire during an overtaking maneuver as a contributing factor. Andre Silva was also a professional footballer, playing for Penafiel in the Portuguese second division.
The tragedy comes just days after Jota’s marriage on June 28. His illustrious career at Liverpool began in 2020 following his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers. During his time at Anfield, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances across all competitions, playing a crucial role in Liverpool’s Premier League title win last season, as well as securing the FA Cup in 2022 and the League Cup in both 2022 and 2024.
On the international stage, Jota was a vital component of the Portuguese national team, earning 49 caps and significantly contributing to their two UEFA Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025.
The news has sent profound shockwaves throughout the global football community, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes. Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro expressed his deepest condolences, describing the deaths as “unexpected and tragic”. The Portuguese Football Federation released a statement expressing their devastation, lamenting the loss of “two champions” and highlighting Jota as an “extraordinary person” known for his “contagious joy”. Liverpool Football Club stated they were “devastated,” while fellow Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo shared his disbelief on social media, writing, “It doesn’t make sense. We were only just in the national team together, you’d only just got married”. Tributes also poured in from his former clubs, including Wolverhampton Wanderers and Pacos de Ferreira, remembering him as an adored player cherished by teammates and fans alike.
