Malaysia’s Telco Industry Hits Saturation, Urged to Innovate

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 June 2025: Malaysia’s telecommunications industry is reaching a point of saturation, according to a recent report by Fitch Solutions. With mobile penetration nearing full capacity, local telco players are being urged to shift strategies to maintain growth and competitiveness.

The report, titled “Winning in Malaysia’s Mature Telco Market”, highlights that traditional methods of gaining more subscribers are no longer effective. Most Malaysians already own mobile devices and have access to internet services, leaving limited space for new customer acquisition.

Instead, industry experts recommend focusing on advanced services such as 5G, fixed broadband, and enterprise solutions. These areas present opportunities to meet rising consumer demands for faster and more reliable digital connectivity.

“Average revenue per user (ARPU) is not growing significantly, even though subscriber numbers are stable,” the report noted. This is mainly due to price competition and a lack of service differentiation among providers.

Analysts also suggest that telcos form partnerships with the government on national digital infrastructure projects. This can help expand network reach and create new revenue streams while supporting Malaysia’s broader digital economy goals.

As the market matures, telcos must innovate beyond traditional connectivity and develop value-added offerings to stay relevant in an evolving digital landscape.
