SYDNEY – Renowned Indian-origin mathematician Professor Nalini Joshi has been awarded Australia’s 2026 Moyal Medal in recognition of her groundbreaking research in applied mathematics and her advocacy for diversity in science.
The prestigious annual award, presented by Macquarie University, recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to mathematics, physics, or statistics. It is named in honour of the late Australian mathematical physicist José Enrique Moyal.
Professor Joshi, who holds the Chair of Applied Mathematics at the University of Sydney, has spent decades breaking barriers in higher education. Born in Myanmar to Indian parents before migrating to Australia, she became the first woman appointed as a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sydney. She later made history as the first Australian and first woman of colour to serve as Vice-President of the International Mathematical Union.
Her core research focuses on integrable systems—complex mathematical equations that form the theoretical groundwork for advancements in physics, engineering, and computing technology.
Beyond her theoretical work, Professor Joshi is widely acknowledged for promoting gender equity across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as mentoring early-career researchers.
As part of the accolade, Professor Joshi will deliver the annual Moyal Lecture at Macquarie University, sharing insights from her career with academics, students, and the public.
