KUALA LUMPUR – Thousands of devotees, temple administrators, and representatives from various religious organizations gathered at Batu Caves on Friday, 22 May 2026, to participate in a peaceful assembly focused on solidarity and the defense of Sanatana Dharma. The mass meeting, which commenced at 3.00 PM, was called in response to recent controversial public remarks that critics say insulted the core tenets of Hinduism.
The event took place at the Indian Cultural Centre Hall within the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple complex. Organized under the leadership of the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Dhevasthanam Kuala Lumpur, the gathering served as a unified platform for the local Hindu community to voice their shared concerns regarding cross-border religious rhetoric.
The assembly remained strictly peaceful throughout the afternoon, adhering closely to local public safety guidelines. Organizers repeatedly reminded the crowd that the primary objective of the gathering was dignity, harmony, and structural unity rather than confrontation.
Leaders Call for Respect and Legal Guardrails
Tan Sri Datuk Dr. R. Nadarajah, the Chairman of the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Dhevasthanam, addressed the large crowd regarding the emotional impact of the controversial statements. He explained that derogatory comments directed at Sanatana Dharma deeply wound the feelings of millions of practitioners worldwide. Tan Sri Datuk Dr R. Nadarajah expressed that the large turnout at an iconic site like Batu Caves demonstrates the community’s quiet resolve to protect its spiritual roots for future generations.
During his speech, Tan Sri Datuk Dr R. Nadarajah urged temple heads and religious bodies to keep talking to one another. He also stressed that the country needs strong laws to stop people from insulting any religion in public, warning that careless comments about sensitive issues only cause unnecessary anger and divisions in society.
Dato N. Sivakumar, a Dhevasthanam Trustee and the President of the Malaysia Council of Hindu Temples and Hindu Associations (MAHIMA), also spoke to the attendees. He praised the crowd for their disciplined behavior and stressed that sustainable advocacy relies entirely on organized, peaceful collaboration.
Background of the Discontent
According to the statements distributed by the organizers, the immediate catalyst for the gathering stems from ongoing political discourse in India. Local devotees have expressed growing frustration over specific legislative speeches and public comments made by political figures in Tamil Nadu, including opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, whose remarks on Sanatana Dharma sparked international debate.

The Batu Caves assembly concluded with a collective pledge by temple heads to focus on cultural education and youth engagement. Participants dispersed peacefully, as directed by administrative calls to handle all future religious discussions with a focus on mutual respect and compliance with local laws.
