TOKYO, June 10 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received a full guard of honour at the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office today. The formal ceremony marked the start of a major push to strengthen economic and technology ties between the two nations.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi welcomed Anwar warmly. Both leaders stood for their national anthems before starting a high-level bilateral meeting. While Anwar made working visits to Tokyo in recent years, this three-day trip is his first formal state-level visit. Both leaders want to advance the strategic partnership they created back in late 2023.
Securing the Tech Supply Chain
The two leaders focused heavily on the global technology supply chain. They want to expand Malaysia’s capabilities in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum computing.
Their talks also covered long-term projects for the future. These include green technology partnerships, clean energy transitions, and regional maritime security. Anwar and Takaichi also discussed ways to improve student exchange programs between their universities.
Boosting Trade and Investment
Economic diplomacy is a central part of this trip. Japan remains Malaysia’s fifth-largest global trading partner. Total trade between the two countries reached RM142.96 billion last year alone.
Anwar is using his time in Tokyo to meet with top Japanese business leaders. He hopes to bring fresh capital into Malaysia’s growing manufacturing sector. By the end of last year, Japanese manufacturing projects in Malaysia were valued at RM107.9 billion. These existing projects currently support more than 347,000 local jobs.
Engaging the Public
The Prime Minister is also balancing state meetings with public events. He will deliver a special lecture to students at Tokyo University. Later in the week, Anwar will give a keynote address at the Nikkei Forum. This speech will highlight Malaysia’s growing role as a leader in Southeast Asia.
