RM4m State Scheme Aims to Transform Unemployed Citizens into Entrepreneurs

SHAH ALAM — The Selangor state government has launched a RM4 million career transition initiative under the Selangor Platform (PLATS) framework to train 5,000 unemployed residents in digital entrepreneurship.

The targeted program provides an alternative economic pathway for individuals who have lost their livelihoods this year. This initiative arrives as a direct response to a challenging labor market, with state data showing that roughly 10,000 Selangor residents faced retrenchment over the past months. The administration is shifting its focus toward sustainable self-employment models rather than relying solely on traditional job placements.

The strategy prioritizes long-term financial resilience for local communities. During the presentation of Phase Two of the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package at the State Legislative Assembly today, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari emphasized that residents must be given the tools to self-start.

“Through the PLATS Career Transition initiative, the state government will provide a pathway for workers who have lost their livelihoods, as well as those interested in becoming entrepreneurs, to be exposed to basic entrepreneurship strategies,” Amirudin stated.

This program is backed by a massive RM209.26 million resilience package designed to cushion local businesses against global economic uncertainties. To ensure these new start-ups survive their critical first year, the state is providing comprehensive operational resources. Participants will receive 12 months of free internet data alongside consistent travel allowances to reduce immediate living costs during training.

The state is launching a parallel Selangor Career Programme to support traditional job seekers. Funded with RM1.5 million, this second scheme works alongside the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) to match the skills of 30,000 residents with immediate openings in the manufacturing, logistics, and retail sectors.
