PETALING JAYA, 16 July 2025: Malaysia recently honored Tun V.T. Sambanthan, a pivotal figure in the nation’s independence and its first Minister of National Unity, during a memorial event that celebrated his profound contributions to national harmony. Organized by the Ministry of National Unity in collaboration with the National Archives of Malaysia, the tribute took place yesterday at Thotta Mahligai, drawing community leaders, students, and guests.
Tun Sambanthan, a founding father and former president of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), played an instrumental role in shaping Malaysia’s multicultural landscape. His unwavering commitment to bridging ethnic divides, fostering racial harmony, and championing the rights of marginalized communities, particularly plantation workers, laid essential foundations for a peaceful and united nation. His efforts extended to improving access to education, housing, and fair employment.
Officiating the event, Minister of National Unity YB Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang emphasized the continued relevance of Tun Sambanthan’s policies aimed at promoting national cohesion. Minister Dagang underscored the importance of educating younger generations about these enduring principles and highlighting lesser-known aspects of the nation’s history. He further announced plans to establish a historical council dedicated to uncovering and accurately presenting Malaysia’s past, including the translation of Tun Sambanthan’s speeches into Tamil for wider accessibility in Tamil schools.
The memorial served as a powerful reminder of Tun V.T. Sambanthan’s visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication to justice, values that continue to guide Malaysia’s journey towards a more united and inclusive society. His legacy remains a beacon for national progress and social harmony.
