KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has successfully undergone an elective laparoscopic surgical procedure to treat an abdominal para-umbilical hernia.
The operation was completed smoothly on August 10, coinciding with the Prime Minister’s 79th birthday.
Post-Operative Recovery and Monitoring
Following the surgical procedure, Anwar commenced targeted physiotherapy and remains under strict medical supervision.
Datuk Dr Asri Ranga bin Abdullah Ramaiah, head of the Prime Minister’s medical team, confirmed that the close monitoring is intended to ensure a smooth and steady recovery process.
According to Senior Press Secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, Anwar is expected to remain under hospital observation for two days while undergoing the prescribed recovery protocols.
Medical Context and History
A para-umbilical hernia occurs when abdominal tissue pushes through a weak spot near the navel. Medical specialists noted that while Anwar has a past medical history of chronic shoulder and spinal issues—including a surgery in 2018—this abdominal procedure is entirely unrelated to his previous musculoskeletal treatments.
The Prime Minister was previously declared in good health following a routine medical evaluation in January.
Official statements indicate that Anwar is expected to return to his office and full duties once cleared by his attending physicians.
