On May 7, 2025, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” targeting nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This action was in response to a terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people, mostly Hindu tourists, were killed.

The operation’s name, “Sindoor,” refers to the red powder Hindu married women apply in their hair parting, symbolizing marital status. After the attack, many women wiped off their sindoor in mourning, making it a symbol of national grief. Among the widows is Himanshi Narwal, whose husband, Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, was killed during their honeymoon.

They had married just a week before. Despite her loss, Himanshi called for peace and urged people not to harbor hatred.Another widow, Aishanya Dwivedi, lost her husband, Shubham, only two months after their wedding. Similarly, Shital Kalathiya mourns her husband, who was also among the victims.

“Operation Sindoor” aimed to dismantle terrorist infrastructures and send a message against terrorism. India reported the elimination of approximately 70 militants during the operation.

Pakistan condemned the strikes, reporting civilian casualties and labeling the operation an “act of war.” The situation has heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, as stated in  India Today
